ABOUT RITA THAKUR & ASSOCIATES
In 1971 Rita commenced a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology at Bombay University and graduated in 1975.
Rita continued her psychology studies by completing a Masters in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work at the TATA Institute of Social Sciences in 1977.
Rita immigrated to Australia in 1984 and commenced a Law degree at the Institute of Technology Sydney, (later University of Technology Sydney) in February 1985. While Rita was completing her law degree she worked with the Department of Community Services as a counsellor. She specialised in working with and treating children who were victims of extreme neglect and abuse, as well as working with their parents.
Rita graduated from UTS with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in 1990, and then attended the College of Law for a period of 6 months. She was then admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia,
For the first six years following the completion of her law studies, Rita worked at a local firm in Shellharbour where she practised primarily in the area of Family Law and was also a Partner briefly.
Ultimately she chose to open her own practice which she could model along her own vision of balancing private practice with serving the community.
Rita Thakur & Associates opened it's doors on 13 October 1997 as the first boutique Family Law practice in the Illawarra.
In the initial years of the practice Rita focused largely on filing victims compensation claims for victims of sexual and physical abuse. This formed a large part of the practice until the State government changed the legislation and such claims were no longer able to be filed by private practitioners.
Rita continues to use her depth of knowledge and experience to assist her clients.
Rita's background in social work and counselling gives her an empathetic understanding in her approach to family law matters. As a result, Rita has a unique insight into potential solutions to complex problems and is able to provide client focused results.
On 13 October 2022 Rita celebrated 25 years of her practice.
Rita is currently a member of Collaborative Family Lawyers Illawarra Shoalhaven and the President of Alliance Francaise Illawarra.
